Shiv Chalisa (with English Translation)

जै गणेश गिरिजा सुवन, मंगल मूल सुजान,

कहती अयोध्यादास तुम, देऊ अभया वरदान.

Hail Lord Ganesh, son of Girija, who is supremely wise and the start of all auspicious events. Ayodhyadas asks to grant him the boon of safety and 

 

जै गिरिजापति दीन दयाला,

सदा करत संतन प्रतिपाला.

Hail Girijapati (Shiv, husband of Girija. Girija means mountain, referring to Mt. Kailash, where Lord supposed to reside.), the ever kind Who always looks after and protects his devotees. 

भाल चन्द्रमा सोहत  नीके,

कानन कुंडल नाग फनी के.

He has the moon upon his forehead,

and in his ears, instead of rings, he has the serpents coiling

 

अंग गौर शिव गंग बहाये

मुंडमाल तन क्षार लगाये.

He is fair complexioned with the divine river, Ganga, flowing from his Around his neck, he has a necklace of severed heads and his body is smeared
 

वस्त्र खाल बाघंबर सोहे,

छवि को देख नाग मुनि मोहे.

He wears the skin of a panther tied around his Looking at his charming view, the serpents and high sages get enchanted.

मैना मातु की प्रिया दुलारी,

बाम अंग रजत शिव प्यारी.

The beloved daughter (referring to Parvati) of Maina is sitting on his lap at his She is supremely dear to Lord

कर मन सोहे त्रिशूल अति भारी,

करही सदा शत्रुन सम्हारी.

He carries a heavy trident in with which he slays the enemies 

नन्दी गणेश सोहे तन कैसे,

मानस मध्य कमल हों जैसे.

With him are Nandi (the bull) and Lord Looking as beautiful as lotus flowers blooming in Mansarovar

 

कार्तिक श्याम और गण राऊ,

या छवि बरनत बने ना काऊ.

He has with him dark complexioned Kartikeya and Ganesh (his No one is capable to describe the full spectacle.

देवन जब ही आई पुकारा,

तबहिं दुख प्रभु आप निवारा. 

Whenever the celestials (devas) faced problems and came You always solved the problems and provided succour

किया उपदर्व तारक भारी,

देवन सब मिली तुम्हरी पुकारी.

Then the demon Tarak wrought The celestials all called to you

 

तुरत षडानन आप पठायो,

लव निमेष माही मार गिरायो.

Then you immediately sent Sadanand (the six faced Kartikeya),

Who, within no time at all, destroyed the demon.

आप जालंधर असुर संहारा,

सुयश तुम्हार विदित संसारा.

You also slayed the demon, Jallandhar,

Your glory is well known to the

 

त्रिपुरासुर संग युद्ध मचाई,

सबहिं कृपा करी लीन बचाई.

By fighting and killing the Demon Tripurasur,

You forgave everybody and saved the

 किया तप भागीरथ भारी,

पुराही प्रतीग्या तासु पुरारी.

King Bhagirath 1 had performed a rigorous And by you grace, you fulfilled his

दरपा छोड़ गंगा तब आई,

सेवक अस्तुति करत सदाई.

Because of this, Ganga (the river), left her abode and came That is why your devotees always sing your  

वेद नाम महिमा तव गाई,

अकथ अनादी भेद नहीं पायी.

 

The Vedas had tried to describe your glory but the same is beyond explanation,

It is impossible to fathom your full

प्रगती उदधि मंथन ते ज्वाला,

जरे सुरासुर भये बिहाला.

The sea churning 2 had produced such a dreadful poisonous Which scared both the Gods and 

महादेवा तब करी सहाई,

नीलकंठ तब नाम धराई.

The, Great God, you came to their rescue and drank the Which stayed in your throat, making it blue, hence you are called Neelkanth (Blue throated)

पूजन रामचंद्रा जब कीन्हा,

लंक जीत विभीषन दीन्हा.

When Lord Ram 3 worshipped You gave him victory over Lanka and made Vibhishan

 

सहस कमल अर्पनाही विचारी,

कीन्हा परीक्षा तबही पुरारी.

During this worship, Lord Ram decided to offer you a thousand lotus Then to assess his firmness of faith, you decided to 

एक कमल प्रभु राखेउ जोई,

कमल नयन पूजन छाहीं सोई.

Lord, you decided to hide one of the Not finding it, Lord Ram substituted his lotus like eye

 

कठिन भक्ति देखी प्रभु शंकर,

भये प्रसन्न दीये इच्छत वर.

Lord Shanker was pleased with his (Ram's) steadfast devotion,

You granted him the desired boon (of slaying Ravaana).

जै जै जै, अनंता अविनासी,

करत कृपा सब के घटवासी.

Hail to thee, O Infinite and Indestructible Shower your grace on everybody, O Omniscient 

दुष्टा सकल मोहि नित्य सतावन,

भर्मित रहे मन चैन ना आवे.

I am always troubled by wicked This makes me distressed with no peace

त्राहि त्राहि मैं नाथ पुकारो,

येह अवसर मोहि, आनि उबारो.

Getting distressed, I pray to you, Lord O Lord, help me in these troubled

ले त्रिशूल शत्रुन को मारौ,

संकट से मोहि आन उबारौ.

Come with your trident and slay my And free me from my problems.

 मात पिता भ्राता सब होई,

संकट में पूँछत नाही कोई.

 

Although I have my mother, father, brothers and Yet in times of trouble, nobody offers  help.

स्वामी एकही आस तुम्हारी,

आन हरहु सब संकट भारी.

O Lord, you are my only hope

O Master, please come and take away this heavy burden (problems).

 धन निर्धन कों देत सदाई,

और जन की पीर मिटाई.

You give wealth to And you wipe away their difficulties.
 

अस्तुति केहि विधि करहु तुम्हारी,

क्षमहु नाथ अब चूक  हमारी.

I do not know of any other way to seek your help from my problems,

Hey, nath, forgive my sins

 

शॅंकर हो संकट के नाशन,

 मंगल कारण.विघ्ना विनासन

Shankar, you are the destroyer of problems,

You are the root of my happiness and remover of all hurdles.

 योगी यति मुनि ध्यान लगाये,

शारद नारद सबी शीश निवायें.

 

All the sages and yogis meditate Saraswati (Goddes of Wisdom), Narad (son of Brahma) and the seers bow in reverence

नमो नमो जै जै न्महों शिवाय,

सुर ब्रह्मादिक पार ना पाये.

I now chant your name, hail hail Namah Shivaye,

Neither Brahma not the Gods could fathom you

 

जो येह पाठ करे मन लायी,

तो कों होत हैं शम्भू सहाई.

Whoever reads this prayer with utmost devotion,

Shall definitely be helped by Lord Shamboo, without any

अऋणीय जो कोई होये भारी
पाठ करे सो पावन हारी

Anyone who owes a heavy loan, must read this prayer to get the blessings.
 

पुतर हौन की इच्छा होई ,

निश्‍चाया शिव प्रसाद से होई.

Anybody without a son who prays Will definitely be blessed with one by Lord

 

पण्डित त्रियोदशी को  घर लावे,

ध्यान पूर्वक तब हौंम करावे.

The devotees should get a priest to perform a yagna (prayer) on the 13th lunar day of the fortnight,

And with full attention and devotion, one must pray to Lord Shiv to get their wishes 

त्रियोदशी वर्त करे हमेशा,

तन नहीं ताके रहे कलेशा.

Whoever fasts on the thirteenth day of the lunar fortnight,

Gets peace of mind and a healthy life

धूप दीप और नैवेद्य चढ़ावे,

शॅंकर सन्मुख पाठ करावे

With a lighted lamp, incense and other payer One should worship before an idol of Lord Shiva with full devotion.

 

जनम जनम के पाप नसावे

अंतवास शिवपुर में पावें.

A devotee of Shiv will have all the sins (karmas) of all his births wiped And in the end, he will live happily in the kingdom of Lord

 

हे शंकर है आस तुम्हारी,

दुख पीड़ा अब हरहु हमारी.

O Lord Shanker, you are my only Now please end all my pains.
